Welcome to Garfield School District

Welcome to the Garfield Public Schools website. The Garfield Schools are in partnership with residents, parents, teachers, administrators, and students. The schools and families are working together to provide a successful learning experience for all students.

Administrators and teachers consistently work to update district curriculum and develop programs to remain on the cutting edge of educational issues. Staff development and support are extensive and on-going throughout the school year. Our schools have strong and supportive parent associations and an active educational foundation that enhance the mission of our district. The relationship between the schools and community is excellent and lends to the overall sense that Garfield is a great place to live and work.

The purpose of this site is to provide you with essential information about our schools and inform you on the many diverse programs the district offers to enhance your child’s academic experience. Whether you are looking for school locations, homework assignments, calendars, or testing dates, we hope that you will use this site often and feel free to share your questions, comments, and suggestions with us.

On behalf of the Garfield Board of Education we extend a congratulations to all the dedicated teachers nominated for the 2011 Teacher of the Year Governor Award. Click to view the winners

Mission Statement

The educational community of Garfield believes that the ultimate goal of each school is to provide intellectual experiences within the context of a multi-cultural setting. This environment will enable each student to achieve their maximum potential. Each school shall seek to assist every student in the development of social skills and moral attitudes needed to successfully meet the challenges of a complex, dynamic, and ever changing world. Each school shall continue to cultivate an appreciation of cultural and aesthetic values so that each student can make choices indicative of a knowledgeable and contributing member of a democratic society. To fulfill this role, the district is committed to creating a flexible educational environment addressing the individualities and potentialities of each student. The staff will endeavor to complete the development of a thinking, tolerant person, well prepared to meet the challenges of school and the life they choose to encounter.

District News & Events

v Parent Tech Night:

Parent Tech Night was held at Schools 6, 7, 8, & 10 in the months of October and November. Parents were invited to learn about Internet safety, resources on the district website and the many online educational resources their child can use for homework help or just for fun. Parents were able to explore these resources in the computer lab during this hands on workshop. They also were given a tour of district online subscriptions such as Study Island and Discovery Education that students use in school. It was a great success. Future Tech Nights are in the planning stage for the remainder of the school year.

v Parent-Teacher Conference:

Parent-teacher conferences were held for the Elementary schools November 7th-9th. This was a great opportunity for parents to meet with the teacher on a one to one basis. Parents learned how their child is progressing in the first trimester of school and ways of improving. Parent-teacher conferences supplement the information conveyed by report cards by focusing on students' specific strengths and weaknesses in individual subjects. Communicating with your child's teacher is a very important part of how successful your child will be in school.

v Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights:

Beginning September 2011, the Garfield School District will be implementing all procedures required by State Law on Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying.  The Garfield School District prohibits all acts of harassment, intimidation, and bullying of any pupil or other person. Learn about the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act.

v Active Living Resource Center,

Is an organization that provides technical assistance to create active communities, sent a task force to  address  childhood obesity. This task force came to Garfield late Spring of 2005 to do a case study with our community. Read, "How Garfield, N.J. Got Its Kids Moving More and Eating Better" from the Active Living Resource Center's website.
